A season of sabbatical and shifting

Good morning, Loved Ones:

It’s July 1, and this month, I choose me. I’ve worked since I was 13, been the bread winner for waaayy too long, and have enjoyed almost all the minutes of my diverse and adventurous career. Now, I’m pausing a beat and choosing me.

Last month ended my time with the dear nonprofit aimed at teaching empathy, leadership, listening, care and service. In my time there I met amazing people, learned valuable lessons from having a birds-eye view of a multi-billion dollar business, grew my own skills and learned I really like people around me. I made some lifelong friends and have had adventures of a lifetime.

Now, on to new adventures, and you all can help. I am going to travel. I am going to take another swing at studying. And, I’ll keep a peaceful ear/eye open for the place, mission, goal and team that will be my next adventure. It’s a time of sabbatical. The Summer of Rebecca.

Earlier in life, one day I literally I had a vision of HOPE, basing my work around a concept in that vision— Harnessing the Opportunity and Power of Education. In fact, it was that HOPE that drove me to my career in higher ed, my work in Africa, and doctoral studies eight years ago.

Now, it’s time to return to my first love—using my God-given mind, talent and passion for making equitable educational opportunity accessible in spaces inequity exists.

What’s next? Heaven truly knows. I’d like to stay in St Louis because I love my friends and my park and a fella I met here. But I’m open because there are cars and planes for traveling and new adventures to be had. The fella already warned me he’ll find me wherever I go, and I’m happy with that answer.

If you see an opportunity for HOPE that makes you think of me, pass it along. If you see a bang-up deal for a flight to South Africa, let me know because I’m longing to go there and study one of my favorite leaders, Nelson Mandela. Mostly, just smile and send good vibes. After years of breadwinning, single momming, leading and the like, it’s time for me.
